Alasdair Hobbs outlines the signs of modern slavery for People Management

According to the UK Government’s latest bulletin update on modern slavery in workplaces across the country, 6,414 potential victims of modern slavery were referred to the Home Office in just three months (from July to September 2025). This was the highest within a single quarter since the Government began its national referral mechanism in 2009. Alasdair Hobbs, employment partner at Excello, explains in this article for People Management what employers and workers need to be aware of to address this growing issue.

He provides a list of red flags to recognise, and guidance around clear policies that employers can introduce to ensure compliance with the law.

An employment law expert who specialises in advising companies on law and best practice on employment issues, Alasdair has experience across a full range of contract issues and regulatory dispute matters. He has overseen a number of major reorganisation and redundancy projects and has significant experience advising on employment tribunal litigation and advocacy.
