Steve Thomas Celebrates Two Major HMRC Settlement Wins

Steve Thomas, an experienced insolvency partner and mediator, has recently delivered two significant victories for clients facing serious tax liabilities owed to HMRC. His mission is to protect our clients’ financial futures through strategic negotiation and legal expertise.

In the first matter, Steve represented two individuals pursued by HMRC for over £3 million, stemming from a tax scheme that was once deemed legitimate, but later reclassified. Despite being asset-rich but cash-poor, and certainly unable to pay within HMRC’s typical 28-day demand, our clients endured two years of relentless pressure, including statutory demands, bankruptcy threats, and aggressive collections activity. Thanks to Steve’s tenacity and deep understanding of insolvency law, a long-term repayment agreement over four years was secured, allowing the clients to meet their obligations without facing insolvency.

In a second case, a company client faced a £450,000 tax liability and imminent winding-up action. Steve was able to avoid any formal legal proceedings entirely. After engaging in intense negotiations, a structured repayment plan was agreed: £100,000 per month for two months, followed by £25,000 per month until the debt is cleared, ensuring full recovery for HMRC while keeping the client’s company operational and out of insolvency.

While HMRC is often seen as the “grim reaper” of the financial world, Steve’s experience in these recent cases reflects a different side – one of reasonableness, proportionality, and pragmatism. It’s important to remember that HMRC’s ultimate role is to collect revenue for the UK’s public services,  amongst other things, and not to force individuals or businesses into ruin where it can be avoided.

At Excello Law, we understand that those who genuinely want to pay, but need time, deserve solutions, not ultimatums. if you are a director or individual who is battling with HMRC and the threats of legal proceedings , then please contact @Steve Thomas
