Philip qualified in 1986 in London but relocated to Leeds in 1991, becoming a partner at Booth & Co Leeds in 1995. Between 1997 and 2006 he was national head of Property Litigation at Addleshaw Goddard, and has since been a partner in the Leeds offices of Ward Hadaway and hlw Keeble Hawson.

Philip has advised government departments, local authorities, PLCs and individuals on all kinds of property disputes, including dilapidations, contractual disputes, business tenancy renewals, Landlord and Tenant Act 1988, rent review and property-related fraud and professional negligence.

His reported cases include Commercial Union v Label Ink (definition of “material breach” in the context of a tenant’s right to break), Northern and Midland v Magnet (time of the essence on rent review), BRS Northern v Templeheights & J Sainsbury plc (reasonable withholding of consent to assign), Gibson Investments v Chesterton (the scope of tenant’s repairing covenants), Asda v Salya Investments (tenant’s improvements on rent review) and Prudential Assurance v PRG Powerhouse (the effect of a CVA on guarantees).

Philip lectures regularly on all aspects of commercial property law, with a particular emphasis on the need for a more constructive approach to dispute resolution in the commercial property industry.

Philip has been recommended in The Legal 500 and referred to in Chambers & Partners’ legal directory as having “a reputation which precedes him” and as “the doyen of property litigators in Leeds”.
